Getting Started

Here are five easy steps to help you get started with academic planning and registration:

Step 1

Review the Freshman Academic Planning Guide. This is your guide to getting started at Tulane, and it includes registration instructions, core curriculum requirements, information about receiving credit for AP and IB exams, transfer credits, and sample freshman schedule.

Step 2

Familiarize yourself with the Newcomb-Tulane Core Curriculum. The core curriculum is designed to provide a common structure to undergraduate study while remaining flexible enough for students to explore and experiment with many fields of study.  Use the Core Curriculum Grid to see how individual school requirements affect the core requirements.

Step 3

Review information about TIDES (Tulane InterDisciplinary Experience Seminars) and Foreign Language Placement. All students take one TIDES elective during their first semester. Also, students must complete the online foreign language placement questionnaire at least 5 days prior to registration.

Step 4

Browse the many degree programs and majors available to students in Newcomb-Tulane College. Consider your academic interests and how they relate to the many opportunities for study at Tulane.  Students interested in professional degree programs in architecture, business, engineering, and public health should pay special attention to the sample schedules in the Freshman Academic Planning Guide to begin the correct course sequences.

Step 5

Make a list of proposed courses for fall to discuss with your academic advisor.
