Bertie Deming Smith

Bertie Deming Smith, born in El Dorado, Ark., has been a longtime friend and supporter of Tulane University. She studied at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., and earned a bachelor of arts at the University of Texas-Austin. She has also received an honorary doctor of humanities from Mary Baldwin College.

Bertie has served as a member of the Tulane University President's Council since 1998. She is a lifetime member of the Tulane Hospital Auxiliary and served on the former Chancellor's Council. She was inducted into the Paul Tulane Society in 1983. In 1998, Tulane dedicated the opening of the Bertie M. and John W. Deming Pavilion at the Tulane University Medical Center. The Deming Pavilion provides housing for medical and public health school students as well as resident doctors.

Bertie and her late husband, John Deming, a 1944 Tulane School of Medicine graduate, were a driving force behind her family's establishment of the Tulane-Murphy Foundation, which supports the Murphy Institiute. John received the Tulane Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1991 and the Tulane Medical Center Chancellor's Award in 1993.

Bertie's husband, Joe D. Smith Jr. is the former chairman of McCormick & Co., publisher of the Alexandria, La., Town Talk. He has served on the boards of Hibernia Bank and South Central Bell. He is a past member of the Public Health Dean's Advisory Council and the Chancellor's Council at the School of Medicine. In 2002, he was awarded the Dean's Medal at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Bertie is a member of advisory councils for both the New Orleans and Alexandria art museums. She also is a member of the Rapides Parish Medical Advisory and a lifetime member of the board of the Family Counseling Agency in Alexandria. She serves on the board of Mary Baldwin College.

Bertie's family ties to Tulane are strong. Her son, Claiborne P. Deming, earned an undergraduate degree as well as a law degree at Tulane. Her daughter, Catherine D. Pierson, who earned a master's degree in history as well as a master of social work at Tulane, is the immediate past chair of the Board of Tulane University.
