Phyllis M. Taylor

Phyllis M. Taylor graduated with honors from Mt. Carmel High School in Abbeville, Louisiana in 1959. She went on to earn her undergraduate degree in histor y from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1963 before entering Tulane Law School, where she received her Bachelor of Laws degree in 1966

Following graduation from Tulane, Phyllis served as law clerk for the Supreme Court of Louisiana and Orleans Parish Civil District Court. She became in-house counsel for John W. Mecom, Sr., beginning her career in the oil industry in 1972. Phyllis assumed leadership of Taylor Energy Company following the death of her husband, Patrick F. Taylor, in November 2004. She also serves as chairman and president of the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, which was started in 1985 to benefit education, law enforcement, the military and other humanitarian efforts.

For over 25 years, Phyllis has devoted her time and energy to issues concerning women, children, health, education and the arts as a member of the boards of numerous organizations. At present, she serves on the New Orleans Business Council and Education Commission of the States. She also serves on the boards of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, Smithsonian, New Orleans Museum of Art and New Orleans Ballet Association, and is the chairman of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. She has received myriad awards in recognition of her public service, including the Alexis
de Tocqueville Award from the United Way.

Phyllis has given back to her alma mater through years of generosity and service. She currently serves as a member of the Tulane University President’s Council, the Tulane Hospital for Children Advisory Board and the Key to the Cure Committee. Previously, she acted as chairman and vice chairman of committees for the Tulane Medical Center Board of Governors from 1987 to 1999. She also served on the Newcomb Dance Board from 1994 to 1998.
