The Scott Cowen Alumni Service Award is given for extended, extraordinary service to the University and local communities. Named after Tulane's beloved 14th President, it recognizes the achievements of alumni who, through their dedicated and voluntary efforts, support the programs and mission of Tulane and their communities. President Cowen exemplifies the meaning of unselfish and committed service to the University and community. Since President Cowen's arrival in 1998, Tulane has more than quintupled its undergraduate applications while experiencing all-time highs in student quality. In addition, Tulane has more than doubled the level of total private giving to the University and received a record level of research awards. The University has implemented a number of innovative academic and research program initiatives and significantly increased its community outreach, including most recently The Cowen Service Challenge, where students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Tulane are challenged to donate 750,000 community service hours through April 2014.
The recipient must prove to have expressed his or her gratitude to the University and ensure a growing impact on the Tulane community and future generations of students. Efforts may include working on behalf of the University through service in alumni programs, on advisory committees, and/or through efforts made to ensure the welfare of the institution and alumni. Additionally, the award honors alumni who have unselfishly and generously contributed their time and talents for the enrichment of others and the betterment of their communities, and recognizes those individuals who have given of themselves in support of various civic, charitable, philanthropic and social welfare organizations.
The candidate must demonstrate the following:
- Extraordinary service that has served Tulane University and/or the Tulane community with distinction;
- Depth and breadth in his or her service activities; and
- Sustained involvement in providing service.
- The recipient must be an alumnus/a of Tulane University.
- The recipient must be in attendance at the designated ceremony in order to receive the award.
