The Tulane Office of Medical Informatics (OMI) helps the Tulane Medical Center plan, develop and implement computer/communications systems to support its missions in medical education, clinical practice, and research. It provides expertise in technologies important in education, electronic publishing, and research and clinical data management. It also provides consultative support, expert assessment of commercial hardware and software, training opportunities, internal software development, and shared equipment and software resources.
To help departments develop their own web sites, the OMI offers WWW workshops and individual consultations. In special cases, the OMI also does site development work for departments who need to create sites quickly. Under these circumstances, the OMI supports departments in taking over long-term managemet of these sites, because they believe that departments and users are both best served by this arrangement.
Medical Informatics support departments and offices of the Tulane Medical Center in the development and maintenance of their own web pages and informational resources on the World Wide Web. It maintains three Web servers that function as a single unit: 1) a general access medical center server; 2) a restricted access server, available only within the Tulane network; and 3) a database server, which provides WWW access to standard relational databases. Departments and programs wishing to develop Web resources are provided with their own areas on one or more of these servers, as appropriate, and are supported by OMI staff in the development of their site.
