Feminist Preoccupations: Liberalism, Gender, and the 'Culture Wars'

Menaka Philips is Professor of Practice with a joint appointment in Political Science and Gender and Sexuality Studies (GESS). Since 2015, she has also been serving as the Program Director for GESS. Philips received her PhD from Northwestern University in Political Science, with a concentration in Political Theory. She has published work on John Stuart Mill, which examines his 'canonization' as a founding figure of liberalism. In addition to completing a book on this theme, she is also working on a project concerning the problematic treatment of Mill's wife, Harriet Taylor Mill, by scholars of political thought. Her broader research interests include democratic theory, feminist and gender studies, American political thought, and postcolonial studies.
