On June 26, 2011, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, sponsored and held Pakistan’s first gay Pride parade. Using this event as an entry point, Professor Charania will map the overlapping discourses of paranoia and benevolence that shape the contemporary neocolonial condition, interrogating both the perils and possibilities for queer subjects in Muslim contexts when state-based freedom projects became the lens through which queer others are seen and narrated and underscoring the epistemological foundation that positions queer Muslims into bifurcated categories of oppressed or free specularity, where the possibility of both are read through the landscape of the fe/male body.
