“All the World’s a Stage”: Shakespeare on the Stages and Streets of New Orleans

On May 18, The Historic New Orleans Collection will host a lecture by Dr. Oliver Hennessey of Xavier University, “All the World’s a Stage”: Shakespeare on the Stages and Streets of New Orleans, in concert with the exhibition “Merry as the Day Is Long”: Shakespeare’s Hand in New Orleans, which will be on view from May 3 through June 4. The lecture and exhibition will explore the influence of the most celebrated writer in the English language on the most European city in the United States. By examining the influence of Shakespeare’s works on New Orleans’s Carnival celebrations and on the city’s live theater performances, Hennessey will provide insight into the process of Creole assimilation of Anglo culture. “Merry as the Day Is Long”: Shakespeare’s Hand in New Orleans exhibition on view May 3–June 4 in the Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street, Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30–4:30 p.m.; and public lecture, “All the World’s a Stage”: Shakespeare on the Stages and Streets of New Orleans, by Oliver Hennessey (Professor, English Department, Xavier University), May 18 at 6:00 p.m., WRC, 410 Chartres Street. Admission to the exhibition and the lecture is free.
