On the Basis of Sex: Sports, Policy History, and the Paradox of Title IX

Elizabeth (Libby) Sharrow is an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, jointly appointed in the Departments of Political Science and History.  Her work explores the role of American public policy in constructing intersectional understandings of sex and gender in contemporary U.S. politics and history.  She is revising a book manuscript which explores the political history of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the emergence of the “female athlete” as political figure.  She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and a M.P.P. from the University of Minnesota, where she also completed a minor graduate program in Feminist and Critical Sexuality Studies.  Her work has been supported by the Social Science Research Council, the American Association of University Women, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and others.
