How Bourbon Street Happened

Richard Campanella, School of Architecture

Richard Campanella will lecture from his new book, Bourbon St., a surprising and engaging history of one of the most famous entertainment strips in the world. 

Campanella is the author of seven critically accalimed books about New Orleans, including the award-winning Bienville’s Dilemma: A Historical Geography of New Orleans, Geographies of New Orleans: Urban Fabrics Before the Storm, and Lincoln in New Orleans. He is a geographer with the Tulane School of Architecture and a columnist for the New Orleans Times -Picayune, Louisiana Cultural Vistas and Preservation in Print. Gambit Weekly readers voted Campanella’s twitter feed as “The Most Informative Twitter Account” for 2014 (@nolacampanella).

Campanella is the only two-time winner of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH) Award for “Book of the Year.” He has also received the Williams Prize for Louisiana History, the Hannah Arendt Prize for Scholarship in the Public Interest from Bard Early College, and the Monroe Fellowship from Tulane’s New Orleans Center for the Gulf South.

Campanella has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, CBS Evening News, PBS NewsHour, CNN, and BBC. His research is regularly cited in the New York Times and the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

A reception will follow at 8:15 pm in the Woodward Way Breezeway.
