TIDES Policies

• Every first-year student must participate in a TIDES course in the Fall semester as a requirement of the undergraduate core curriculum.

• TIDES courses are not required for transfer students.

Due to space limitations, each student is allowed to take ONLY ONE (1) TIDES course.

• Most TIDES courses offer 1 credit hour. The reading and writing assignments as well as projects and co-curricular activities are aligned accordingly. More Than Just Business is a 1.5 credit hour class with a Service Learning Component.

In conjunction with the Center for Public Service, several TIDES classes will be offer a Service Learning component, which will satisfy your first unit of Service Learning for the Public Service Graduation Requirement. (

• As of Fall 2008, all TIDES classes will no longer be satisfactory/unsatisfactory. You will receive a letter grade that will factor into your GPA. Each professor determines the standards and expectations for satisfactory completion of assigned work.

• Most TIDES meet for 75 minutes per week for the first 10-12 weeks of the semester.

• There are no final exams in TIDES courses.

• Attendance is critical in TIDES classes since the classes meet only 10 times and class participation is usually factored into the final grade. Students who have more than 2 unexcused absences may be given a non passing grade.

• Students register for TIDES through TOUR (Tulane Online University Records) like any other class. The TIDES courses are found in the Newcomb-Tulane College section of the Registrar website.

• After the first week of class, a student may only add a TIDES course with the permission of the instructor.

• TIDES classes learning experiences are enriched through interaction with guest presenters, field trip guides and site visit hosts from the greater New Orleans community. TIDES students are expected to behave maturely and respectfully, being mindful to be a positive representative of Tulane University. At all official TIDES events, both on and off-campus, students are subject to the University Code of Student Conduct.
