Sophie B. Wright is a charter school serving grades 6-12 and is located at the intersection of Napoleon Ave. and Prytania St.Sophie B. Wright has approximately 400 students who come from neighborhoods all over Orleans Parish. Volunteers at Sophie B. Wright primarily serve as tutors for the 7th and 8th graders and as reading buddies/tutors to the 6th graders.
FTC also places service learning and Work-Study students as classroom assistants upon teacher request. Community volunteers are most often placed as 6th grade reading buddies, but are also welcome to request another placement.
All 6th graders receive a reading buddy to work with for 30-40 minutes each week aiding with school work and then enjoying leisure reading together. The 7th and 8th graders work with a FTC tutor based on academic needs at the teachers' request.
Those students with remedial needs may work with a FTC tutor for upwards of 2 hours each week. FTC volunteers also work with high school students, but none are assigned an individual tutor. Individuals interested in working with high school students are given an individual student or small groups of students by a teacher. Volunteers also assist with the marching band, ACT prep courses, and special education students.
