1. What is the Tulane AmeriCorps Fellows Program?

The Tulane AmeriCorps Fellows Program is a partnership between Tulane University, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Aspen Institute's Franklin Project.  Through contributions from the Corporation for National and Community Serivce's AmeriCorps VISTA program and Tulane University, this program provides funding for eight Fellows to deeply engage with a New Orleans community agency.  Fellows will serve in the community for 12 months, working with one non-profit organization.

2. Who is eligible for this program?

While open to the general public, Tulane students are strongly encouraged to apply to the program for the year immediately following their undergraduate graduation.

3.  What is the Fellows scope of work?

Fellows will work at their partner site four days per week (Monday-Thursday). Fellows will serve as liaisons between Tulane, their partner agencies, and the communties in which they are placed. They will also research other organizations that do similar work to their partner organizations and try to build interagency collaborations. On Fridays, the Fellows will convene at Tulane to participate in a rigorous professional development and training curriculum.

4.  What are the benefits of the program?

These prestigious fellowships will allow recent graduates to develop professional skills as they continue the important community-based initiatives they supported during their undergraduate years. In return for their service, fellows will receive:

  • Living stipend of approximately $11,500 disbursed in monthly payments over a 12-month term
  • Free housing in University-managed facilities
  • Segal AmeriCorps Educational Award
  • Additional $5000 in tuition assistance for a Tulane graduate program immediately following year of service (only available to recent Tulane undergraduate alumni).

  • Additional AmeriCorps VISTA benefits

5.  Does this program provide health insurance for participants?

While all AmeriCorps members have access to health benefits,  these are not considered health insurance.  Most fellows will be able to remain on their parents/guardians insurance plan. Others may need to purchase their own plan.  For more information about the health benefits provided, click here.

6. Will I automatically qualify for a student loan deferment or forbearance?

You may qualify for postponement, or forbearance, of the repayment of your loans during your service. The education award will help you pay off qualified student loans when you're finished. Contact your lender for more specific information or to confirm your loan status during VISTA service.

7. Can I hold another job during my service?

When you serve as a VISTA you are committed to the program 24/7, meaning you cannot hold any outside employment.
