Teach for America charter corps member and 2010 Texas alternative certification middle school teacher of the year Jayda Batchelder led 93 percent of her eighth-grade science students at a southwest Oak Cliff middle school to a Commended score on the TAKS exam, a rate 28 percent higher than the district average.
She also founded the Flip Oak Cliff Project, an after school program in which 30 selected students created short films to document their lives, their dreams and their futures according to the theme "I dream, therefore I am."
And, Jayda spearheaded the development of a book and curriculum to guide students from middle school to their first year of college.
Jayda, a public health graduate from Tulane's Katrina class, is making a difference in Texas public schools.
