The Office of University Relations and Development is comprised of all externally focused areas of the university, including Government and Community Relations, University Communications and Marketing, Community Relations and Partnerships, Alumni Relations and Development. The Executive Vice President for University Relations and Development heads the area and reports directly to the president of the university.
The Executive Vice President, in consultation with the members of the President’s Cabinet and the deans of the schools and college, the Development Committee of the Board of Tulane and the University Senate Budget Review Committee, formulates policies and programs relative to the financial support of the university from all philanthropic and government sources; coordinates and oversees the university’s relationship with all levels of government and agencies, including federal, state, and local entities; and oversees the cohesive communications, visual identity, marketing and branding strategy for the university in its development of outreach to internal and external constituencies through the work of the following offices.
Development Administration: The Office of Development Administration provides coordinated operational, budgetary and human resource support for the overall fundraising effort.
Government and Community Relations: The Office of Government and Community Relations works to advance Tulane’s mission in research, teaching and service by aggressively seeking government funding for university programs and activities; developing strategies for the university’s coordinated response to challenges, threats and opportunities related to federal, state and local government legislation and activities; coordinating the development of university programs and cross-university partnerships that have the potential for significant government funding; and acting in an advisory capacity for on-going government-awarded projects as appropriate. The office also works to promote Tulane’s image and relations in the community and with its neighbors, and with city, state and federal government officials through targeted communications, special events and publications.
University Communications and Marketing: The Office of University Communications and Marketing conducts and coordinates public relations, communications, and public affairs issues for the entire university with a variety of audiences, including alumni, potential donors, potential students, state and national education associations, other national organizations, the media, members of the university community and the general public. It is also responsible for university publications, Athletics marketing, website development and development communications. The office handles all media, marketing and branding activities for the university.
Leadership Giving: The Office of Leadership Giving identifies and coordinates solicitation of individuals interested in supporting major university initiatives through school-based, reunion and annual giving, and gift planning options and activities that encourage deferred gifts such as bequests, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities and life insurance, as well as current gifts of securities, real estate, and other property. The office seeks to identify potential donors at the major gift levels and higher, as well as donors interested in the targeted support of the Schools of Architecture, Business, Continuing Studies, Law, Liberal Arts, Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Science and Engineering, Social Work and Newcomb-Tulane College. The support unit of Development Research is part of Leadership Giving.
Constituency Programs: The Office of Constituency Programs designs, executes and coordinates activities that forge strong bonds with and promote the active involvement of alumni, parents, staff, council and board members in the life of the university community locally, regionally and nationally. The office oversees the university’s development efforts in the northeast, particularly New York, and develops large-scale events, including Homecoming, Wave, and fundraisers like the Hullaballoo Auction and Beads on Broadway. Through Athletics Development and general and targeted giving campaigns, the office encourages the participation of new donors and existing constituent groups. The support units of Donor Relations and Development Writing are part of Constituency Programs. The office serves as the university’s liaison to the Board of Regents.
School of Medicine Office of Development: The School of Medicine Office of Development cultivates relationships and establishes lifelong connections between the school and its alumni, grateful patients, friends, constituents and community, leading to increased health-related focus and support for the school’s mission and goals, particularly in the area of community-based health and hospital care.
Alumni Relations: The Office of Alumni Relations designs, executes and coordinates activities that promote alumni involvement in the life of the university community. The Tulane Alumni Association and Alumni Clubs in cities worldwide serve as liaisons between alumni in the regions and the university.
Alumni Development Information Services (ADIS): The Office of Alumni Development Information Services (ADIS) provides centralized information processing and information services for alumni and development offices at Tulane University. These services include the operation and maintenance of the Advance System, the alumni/development database; the processing and receipting of all charitable gifts and pledges to the university; reporting services; and the support of personal and desktop hardware and software.
Development Legal Affairs: The Office of Development Legal Affairs promotes compliance with Board of Regents regulations and with donor intent in the administration of gifts dedicated for restricted purposes, and serves as a liaison with external investment managers, the Board of Regents’ Eminent Scholar Program and as custodian for the planned giving program accounts and other internal and external trusts.
Corporate, Foundations and Research Relations: The Office of Corporate, Foundations and Research Relations identifies potential corporate and foundation donors; initiates and maintains contact between the university and representatives of business, industry and charitable foundations; and coordinates the submission of proposals for corporate and foundation giving in cooperation with faculty members and other administrative officers.
