Conference: The Urban Education Future? Lessons From New Orleans 10 Years After Hurricane Katrina
June 18-20, 2015 

A national conference hosted by the Education Research Alliance for New Orleans (Era-New Orleans) at Tulane University, in partnership with The Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives. Held June 18-20, the conference will feature local and national critics and supporters of the reforms for three days of panel discussions, lectures and research presentations examining a decade of reforms to the New Orleans public education system.

In addition to the Era-New Orleans researchers who will present up to 15 new studies, speakers will include:

•  Scott Cowen, president emeritus, Tulane University
•  Kira Orange Jones, member, Board of Elementary and Secondary Education; executive director, Teach For America
•  Rick Hess, director of education policy studies, American Enterprise Institute
•  Pedro Noguera, Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education, New York University
•  James Shelton, former deputy secretary, U.S. Department of Education
•  Randi Weingarten, president, American Federation of Teachers

Sessions will focus on equity and student outcomes, with topics including teachers and instructional quality, charter schools and charter management organizations, school choice, charter authorization and closure, finances, and test-based accountability. Most sessions will include new data from Era-New Orleans and other organizations.

A conference to disseminate the scientific findings from two sets of studies based at Tulane. The first set is the NSF-funded CNH (Coupled Human and Natural Systems) “Diversity and Disease in a Post-Trauma Urban Landscape” Study. The second set is the “Health and Demographic Disparities in Recovery from Hurricane Katrina: KATRINA@10” Program. The conference also will cover the implications of the scientific findings from these two sets of findings for disaster policy.

10 Years of Post-Katrina Recovery: 2005-2015 at the Library 

An exhibition of photographs and displays and a computer presentation that highlights the recovery of Howard-Tilton Memorial Library and Jones Hall Special Collections after the post-Katrina levee breaks flooded the buildings’ basements. The exhibition starts with the recovery of damaged library materials in September 2005 and covers the years leading up to the Build Back and Hazard Mitigation construction of two floors on top of Howard-Tilton expected to finish in October 2015. Located on the first floor of Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, the exhibition opens on August 20 and can be seen during library hours.
