Professor Smith's teaching falls into the broad categories of African American and African Diaspora literature and culture. He has taught African American literature surveys; the literature of African American modernism (including the Harlem Renaissance and literary primitivism); contemporary African American literature and culture (including drama and performance); African American expatriate literature; African Diaspora literature; and the music and performance culture of black New Orleans. He has also taught courses on major African American authors Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and August Wilson.
