1. Review degree requirements with graduate advisor. Check credit hours and language requirements.
2. Complete and submit Application for Degree to the SLA Graduate Programs Office by the appropriate semester deadline. See Deadlines and Forms Required for Graduation sections below.
3. Complete dissertation/thesis per program requirements and Guidelines for Preparing Theses and Dissertations.
4. Set dissertation/thesis defense date with committee. Allow ample time to defend dissertation/thesis and complete necessary revisions before the submission deadline. Upon successful defense, have your committee complete and sign the Oral Defense Approval Form. Turn this form into the SLA Graduate Programs office immediately following defense.
5. Complete any corrections to the dissertation/thesis as required by your committee.
6. Submit dissertation/thesis to:
a) Electronic copy with committee signatures cover sheet to ProQuest/UMI Dissertation Publishing AND to the Tulane Library Digital Repository for official publishing. Submission to both sites by the deadline is REQUIRED for graduation. There is no fee for traditional publishing submissions to either site.
b) Submit one single-sided, unbound hard copy of dissertation/thesis on 20 lb., 100% cotton, white, untextured, acid-free paper with original signed committee cover sheet and abstract to the SLA Graduate Programs Office. (An abstract is not required for masters thesis). Make sure the left margin is 1 ½” and all others are 1”. This copy will become the copy of record in the Tulane library system.
7. PhD students complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates electronically.
8. PhD and Masters students participating in the Spring (May) graduation Hooding Ceremony ONLY must also complete the Graduate Commencement Participation Form. See Forms Required for Graduation section below.
Graduate degrees and diplomas are awarded three (3) times per year:
If you graduate in fall or summer, you may participate in the graduate programs recognition/hooding ceremony and/or the unified commencement the following spring.
The Registrar's Office distributes diplomas. Diplomas are not available until after the degree is conferred. Because there is no commencement in August or December, graduates complete the appropriate section of the Application for Degree to obtain their diploma. Students may opt to 1) pick up their diploma, 2) have the diploma mailed, or 3) request that the diploma be held by the Registrar's Office until commencement. May graduates complete the mail diploma section of the Application for Degree only if they do not intend to participate in commencement. Diplomas will be distributed after the unified ceremony on Saturday.
To assist the Graduate Programs office in providing you with important information, your current email address should be on file with this office. This information should be included on the Application for Degree available in "Forms Required for Graduation" section below. The information on the commencement form is also provided to the University Registrar for mailing your diploma if you wish it to be mailed to you. An acceptable mailing address, not a post office box number, must be provided on this form. The address can be used by all university offices to provide you with information about graduation.
Students who wish to graduate must complete an application for degree. Applications for degree must be filed for the current term. Applications filed in previous terms are not valid. (Should you not graduate when expected, it is your responsibility to complete another degree application.)

Understandably, submitting a thesis or dissertation can be the most challenging and stressful part of completing one's degree requirements. Students should allow themselves ample time to defend their theses/dissertations and complete any necessary revisions before the submission deadline posted by the School of Liberal Arts. Theses/Dissertations have to be in a specific format. Formatting instructions can be found in the Guidelines for Preparing Theses and Dissertations. Theses/Dissertations are not accepted after the submission deadline.
An electronic copy (pdf) of thesis/dissertation with the committee signatures cover sheet must be submitted to ProQuest/UMI Dissertation Publishing AND to the Tulane Library Digital Repository for official publishing. Submission to both sites is REQUIRED.
You will receive an e-mail confirmation from the Tulane Digital Repository when your electronic submission is complete. Please include a hard copy of this email WITH the hard copy of your dissertation when it is submitted to the Graduate Programs Office.
