Message from the Dean

Welcome, New and Returning Students

Dean Carole Haber
Professor of History

On August 25th, we had the pleasure of meeting the outstanding class of 2017. Coming from across the country, and even around the world, they bring with them an array of talents and interests that reflect the diversity of the School of Liberal Arts. At our open house, new freshmen and transfers, along with their parents, visited tables staffed by engaged and dedicated faculty from our sixteen departments and eighteen programs. Their questions were insightful; their enthusiasm contagious. One new student hoped to work for the Hullabaloo and have three majors; another planned to take advantage of numerous study abroad options while combining an interest in political science with international development; a third wanted to join his talents in creative writing, film production, and music performance. And, as many learned, the ability to engage in New Orleans, both through public service courses and through classes that explore its unique culture, means they are about to begin an education that is unmatched—and unmatchable—anywhere.

The Sunday open house was followed on Friday by a Welcome Back Party hosted by the School of Liberal Arts Student Government. For both new students and old, this event demonstrated that SLA is not just about classes and engagement in the city, but community as well. For two hours both returning students and old shared snoballs, play equipment, music, and hopes for the coming year. We were delighted to hear of your stories as you got settled for the first time at Tulane, or returned for your final years. We express our deepest appreciation to the student leaders who made this occasion possible and anticipate great events to come.

In the year ahead, I look forward to meeting more students in the School of Liberal Arts and hearing of your interests and aspirations. We know that whether you wish to major in the social sciences, humanities, or arts – or are still undecided but anxious to explore new disciplines – you share our commitment to an education that will challenge you to think, write, analyze, and communicate, while you develop your own ideas and hone your distinctive voice. We welcome you warmly to the School of Liberal Arts!
