Lynn Peril: The 2010 Adele Ramos Salzer Lecturer

On Monday, September 27, 2010, a group of over 100 people came to the Lavin Bernick Center at Tulane to hear Lynn Peril as the 2010 Adele Ramos Salzer Lecturer. Peril is the author of College Girls: Bluestockings, Sex Kittens and Coeds, Then and Now (W.W. Norton & Co., 2006). While referencing College Girls, a cultural perspective on the history of women in higher education from the 19th century to the late 1990s, she spoke about Newcomb College and it's relevance to female education for over a century. Some of her reference material from the lecture came from the Newcomb Archives.

In the words of one journalist, Lynn Peril is “an archivist of all things retro and girly.” She is obsessed with vintage advice books, particularly sex and dating manuals, etiquette and self-help books, and health, beauty and fashion guides, as well as other detritus of popular culture, especially that concerning gender-related behavioral prescriptions. She is also the author of Pink Think: Becoming a Woman in Many Uneasy Lessons (2002). Her column, “The Museum of Femoribilia” appears in Bust magazine. She is a frequent contributor to Ms. Peril lives in Oakland, California, with her husband and two cats. Her next book, Swimming in the Steno Pool: A Retro Guide to Making It in the Office, was recently published by W.W. Norton in the spring of 2011.

The lecture series is dedicated to Adele Ramos Salzer (NC, 1940). Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Salzer exhibited a love of learning and a sincere devotion to Newcomb College. Her interest in academic programs focusing on women's experiences led to the establishment of the Salzer lecture series at Newcomb College Center for Research on Women. Her donation endowing the series has been generously strengthened through gifts in her memory from her family, friends, and classmates.

Past Salzer Lecturers have included Susie Bright, Lisa Ling, Felicity Hill, Jil Ker Conway, and Helen Caldicott.
