Ellen Gilchrist, the 20th Zale Writer-In-Residence, is woman of many pursuits: she is a novelist, short story writer, and poet. Gilchrist was in Vicksburg, Mississippi, but spent the majority of her childhood years on a plantation owned by her grandparents. Gilchrist has always been interested in writing but earned her B.A. from Millsaps College in philosophy.

Ellen Gilchrist's writing is known for its diversity: she has been praised by readers of all ages for her subtle perceptions, unique characters, and plot lines which have always remained centered upon her native Mississippi. Though Gilchrist is known across the literary world as a poet and also receives critical attention for her short stories and novels. She still dapples in poetry, but believes fiction is her strong point.

Gilchrist currently splits her time between Arkansas and Mississippi, as well as between her three children, fourteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She also continues in what she calls her lifelong dream, writing.

Ellen Gilchrist's time at Tulane included a public reading in honor of the author's 70th birthday, conducted at Mcalister Auditorium. Gilchrist then hosted a symposium entitled "The Writing Life" with visiting writers Ethan Canin and Molly Giles, in accordance with Tulane writers Peter Cooley and Paula Morris. This symposium honored the 20th anniversary of the Zale program. On April 16th, Gilchrist participated in the Faulkner-Welty Symposium convened by the Tulane Deep South Regional Humanities Center and the Tulane Department of English.
