Educating undergraduate women for leadership in the 21st century.

  • Full-time, undergraduate Tulane University students (including those enrolled in 4+1 programs) who self-identify as women, including self-identified transwomen, or who were assigned to the female sex at birth and now self-identify as transgender or gender fluid are eligible to apply for funding from the Newcomb College Institute. The applicant must be enrolled full time in the Newcomb-Tulane Undergraduate College (Schools of Architecture, Business, Liberal Arts, Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Science & Engineering), including 4+1 programs in those schools, or full-time in the School of Continuing Education. 

  •  Funding for research grants is also available to any full-time, undergraduate student doing a women's or gender studies related project. 

  • Funded projects must have academic merit and promote the mission of Newcomb College Institute, contributing in a significant way to the education of women. Project proposal should clearly describe this element.

  • A faculty/student collaborative grant should distinguish the work the student will perform from the faculty member’s larger project. In other words, a collaborative grant should not pay for a student simply to assist a faculty member. A collaborative grant should not pay for a student simply to assist a faculty member. The collaborative grant should support a student’s work in its own right, even when a part of a larger project. Neither the faculty member nor the student may be paid a stipend in a collaborative grant, as the grant is awarded in both the student's and the faculty member’s name.  A student may receive a stipend if working as an assistant to the faculty grant recipient and assisting the faculty member with her/his work. A student may not receive a stipend if the grant is in the student's name and the student is doing independent work, although under a faculty member's guidance.

  • If the grant is connected to a student group, there should be consultation with that organization and a letter of support from the faculty sponsor of that group.

  • Funds awarded in fall 2015 are available until September 1, 2016. Funds awarded in spring 2016 are available until December 1, 2016. Requests for reimbursement or funds transfer must be presented prior to the end-of-cycle date, at which time funds revert to the Newcomb Fellows Grant Program.

  • A grant report is due at the conclusion of the funding period. Future grant funding will take into consideration the completion and quality of research as reflected in this report.

  • Deadlines for submitting grant proposals are strictly adhered to. Packets must be complete at time of submission. Deadline for fall 2015 cycle is 4pm on October 30, 2015. Deadline for spring 2015 cycle is 4pm on March 4, 2016.

  • All permission and waiver forms for international travel must be complete and signed by student and parent/guardian (regardless of student's age) before student receives a formal letter of acceptance into the Newcomb Grant Program.

  • Items which would become the personal property of the grant recipient (books, laptops, clothing) are not funded.

  • All grant proposals must include the budget worksheet provided at the Newcomb College Institute website.

  • We do not reimburse expenses for alcoholic beverages. We do not provide a per diem for grant recipients, students working with grant recipients, or guests.

  • Grant recipients should be creative in using the funding they receive, such as seeking the lowest available airfares.

  • Reimbursements may not exceed the grant award; if costs run over, the grant recipient is responsible for covering the excess.

  • The faculty sponsor of a student grant proposal must be a Newcomb Fellow and should be from the student’s major department. The faculty sponsor must agree to guide the applicant through the Internal Review Board process, if necessary.   • An applicant may submit only one proposal in a grant category (i.e. only one research grant proposal, not two).

  • The Newcomb Grant Program does not fund tuition for courses for which academic credit is received.  The Program does fund research that is or becomes the basis for a credit-bearing Honors thesis, independent study, or capstone project.

  • The Newcomb Grant Program may considering funding some costs associated with participation in a structured, participatory program if the applicant can demonstrate how participation in the program facilitates independent research and directly relates to their academic goals, particularly if the student is gathering research for an honors thesis or capstone project. Applicants seeking funding for these programs should consult with Laura Wolford before submitting a proposal.
