Dear Tulanians,

We have issued three crime alerts recently about incidents off-campus. We issue these alerts to better prepare us against potential crime. TUPD continues to work closely with the New Orleans Police Department as well as neighborhood organizations to combat crime in the area around our campuses. We have beefed up staffing in our 1-mile perimeter patrol area and now have close to 20 TUPD officers assigned to the perimeter. That is in addition to the regular NOPD patrols and the off-duty officers hired by some of the neighborhoods.

As helpful as this additional personnel is, it cannot replace our individual responsibility to be aware of our surroundings. It is difficult to prevent every crime but there are some simple steps to discourage many criminals. Given that we are at the start of a new academic year, now is a good time to review some personal safety options available to Tulane students, faculty and staff.

Uptown Patrolled Pedestrian Corridors - TUPD officers are concentrated uptown in areas frequently travelled by Tulanians at night. We urge you to stay on these corridors should you be walking at night:

  • Calhoun from St. Charles to South Claiborne

  • Broadway from St. Charles to South Claiborne

  • Freret from Calhoun to Broadway

  • Maple Street from Broadway to South Carrollton

  • Willow Street from Calhoun to South Carrollton

  • Safety Escorts - TUPD officers will escort you if you are within one mile of the uptown or downtown campuses. You may request a safety escort uptown by calling (504) 314-7233 and a downtown safety escort by calling (504) 988-5555.

Rave Guardian - Register for the Rave Guardian virtual escort. You may activate the escort by simply dialing a phone number and inputting the amount of time it will take to arrive at your destination.

As always, I urge you to report any suspicious activity and always be aware of your surroundings, wherever you may be.

    Supt. Jon Barnwell
