River and Coastal Center

The Tulane Center of Excellence (CoE) for Coastal Protection and Restoration is a new interdisciplinary effort at the Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research (CBR) in the Mississippi river delta. The project will also establish the identity of a new Tulane University riverfront campus in downtown New Orleans. With the CoE as its centerpiece, this campus will serve as a magnet for research and investment, providing an exceptional platform for expanding existing and emerging economic sectors capable of restoring and protecting the coast. The project will be developed in phases and will include new laboratory, exhibition, educational, and conferencing facilities, in addition to open space and parking.

The site is located in New Orleans, on the Mississippi River. It is bounded by the river to the east, a property line just west of the flood wall and rail lines, and an existing Port Authority property to the north. This first phase of the project will be a portion of the Robin Street Wharf adjacent to the existing Mardi Gras World facility, which is used for creation and storage of parade floats, as well as a tourist destination and occasional event space. In the long term, the goal is to redevelop the entire wharf to include a riverfront promenade along a new research and education district adjacent to the Morial Convention Center and the related future convention center expansion to include residential, commercial and retail development.
