The mission of the Industrial Hygiene Graduate Certificate Program is to satisfy the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) education requirements for Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH) and to train students to successfully pass the CIH exam.


The Industrial Hygiene Graduate Certificate Program provides graduates with the knowledge and skills to meet education requirements held by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) to qualify for the ABIH certification exam. The CIH certification is the hallmark of professional achievement and competence within the field of industrial hygiene.

Program Competencies

  • Use basic scientific and engineering principles to anticipate and identify potential hazards in the workplace (GEHS 6300, GEHS 6600, GEHS 6620, GEHS 6720).
  • Apply the methods and techniques of analytical chemistry and other measurement sciences to quantify the degree of hazard of identified occupational health stressors (GEHS 6720).
  • Interpret toxicology literature and health data and incorporate these into the management of occupational health hazards (GEHS 6540, GEHS 6600).
  • Select, evaluate, and manage the use of appropriate types of personal protective equipment for control of worker exposures (GEHS 6300, GEHS 6620, GEHS 6720).
  • Utilize critical thinking in the development, management, and evaluation of industrial hygiene programs (GEHS 6720).
  • Interpret and assure compliance with applicable government regulations and standards pertaining to occupational safety and health (GEHS 6300, GEHS 6540, GEHS 6620, GEHS 6720, GEHS 7310).

Certificate Requirements

To obtain the certificate, the student must successfully complete 12 semester credits of graduate coursework as listed in the curriculum. The curriculum consists of 2 required courses (6 credits) plus 2-3 additional elective courses (6 credits) on IH related topics. The student must score at least a (C) in all courses in the curriculum. All courses are taught by experienced, appropriately credentialed Tulane faculty.

Admission Requirements

Admission takes place as a special (non-degree seeking) student in the School of Public Health and follows the IH graduate program guidelines.

  • The applicant must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0.
  • A baccalaureate degree which includes a minimum of 60 semester hours or the equivalent in undergraduate or graduate level courses in mathematics, engineering, science, and technology, with at least 15 of those at the upper (junior, senior, graduate) level.
  • An official undergraduate transcript
  • Test of English As a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores for applicants from non-English speaking nations with a minimum score of 570 on the paper-based test, 230 on the computer based test, or 88 on the internet-based test is preferred.
  • A strong base of computer skills including the ability to use the Internet, to manipulate and organize computer-based files and e-mail, to use MS Office applications (intermediate proficiency preferred), and to implement technical instructions and guidance as appropriate.
