GEHS 7110 - Industrial Ventilation and Hazard Control, 3 credits
Fundamentals of design and operation of ventilation systems as a means for controlling airborne toxic materials in the workplace are discussed. Basic air flow, dilution ventilation,hood design, duct design, and balancing, fans, air cleaners, and testing of ventilation systems are discussed in detail. Emphasis is on design principles for local exhaust systems. Students are expected to complete a design project. (IH)
Prerequisite: GEHS 6720 - Principles of Industrial Hygiene, 3 credits
Course Learning Objectives
The student will be able to:
- Utilize fundamental physical chemical principles such as ideal gas laws, Antoine equation, and Raoult’s Law to estimate chemical emission rates, airborne concentrations, and hazard level.
- Evaluate product substitution, source modification, isolation, separation, and automation as alternative engineering controls of chemical hazards.
- Specify the types, uses, and limitations of personal protective equipment for chemical hazards.
- Use the transient dilution ventilation equation to predict the buildup or decay of pollutant concentrations over time and calculate required dilution ventilation rates for general control of toxic and flammable chemical pollutants in indoor spaces.
- Calculate required fresh air ventilation rates in occupied building spaces.
- Apply the Bernoulli equation to estimate static and velocity pressures within flowing airstreams.
- Assess the advantages and limitations of the various kinds of local exhaust ventilation hoods.
- Design appropriate local exhaust ventilation hoods and calculate capture velocity, hood entry loss, required flow rate, and transport velocity.
- Determine the cumulative pressure losses in a branched ventilation system and ensure the system is balanced and will perform according to design specifications.
- Perform appropriate tests on existing ventilation systems to evaluate their performance and efficacy.
- Apply the fan laws to local exhaust ventilation systems.
- Assess the advantages and limitations of various air cleaning technologies and the recirculation of air.
