GEHS 7620 - Health Risk Assessment

Principles of quantitative human health risk assessment. This course develops the qualitative and quantitative skills necessary to evaluate the probability of health effects from exposure to environmental contaminants. Basic concepts of qualitative and quantitative risk assessment are demonstrated with practical case studies. Emphasis is place on hazard identification, dose-response evaluation, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. Integration of risk assessment with risk management and communicating risks to the public are discussed. Regulatory aspects of risk assessment in the promulgation of environmental standards are presented.

Course Learning Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Define and discuss basic risk assessment concepts and their basis in human health toxicology
  2. Identify and explain the four steps in qualitative and quantitative risk assessment: hazard identification; dose-response evaluation; exposure assessment; risk characterization.
  3. Use quantitative risk assessment methods and mathematical models for high-to-low dose extrapolation in non-cancer health outcomes.
  4. Use quantitative risk assessment methods and non-threshold mathematical models for cancer risk assessment.
  5. Discuss the derivation, uses, limitations and applications of uncertainty analysis and probabilistic risk assessment.
  6. Perform exposure assessments based on data from case studies.
  7. Perform health risk assessment of chemical mixtures, genotoxic chemicals and developmental and reproductive toxicants.
  8. Evaluate the use of risk assessment within risk management and risk reduction decision making. Use the different multimedia cleanup models, demonstrate the economics of remediation and risk reduction.
  9. Describe the importance of risk communication, public meetings and interacting with the press/media within the risk assessment context.
  10. Conduct and evaluate the process of public health risk assessment and management for populations near hazardous waste sites as detailed under EPA/SUPERFUND rules.
  11. Compare and contrast methodology and assumptions used in regulatory toxicology and risk assessment as practiced by the EPA, FDA, OSHA, CDC, and ASTDR.
  12. Integrate emerging and non-traditional data (e.g. genetic susceptibility) into the practice of risk assessment.
  13. Obtain and use published risk assessment guidelines and information resources for databases supporting the public health professional involved in risk assessment.
