Personal Statement:

My major interests are in the area of behavioral medicine, i.e. those behaviors that influence either health or the development of disease. Examples are tobacco and alcohol use, nutrition, physical activity, stress, and teen pregnancy/sex education. Included with my interest in these areas are all variables that influence the performance of these behaviors, such as environmental factors, social factors (family, peers), and personal factors, such as self-image, self-referencing thought, motivation, etc. I am also keenly interested in the theoretical principles that help explain and consolidate all of the factors involved in health behaviors. Another interest is the documentation and data collection for process evaluation that helps to explain intervention implementation and program outcomes. My school-based research in health education and health promotion demonstrate the interests identified above.
