Personal Statement:

Donald "Diego" Rose has worked on food and nutrition programs and policies in both domestic and international contexts. Earlier in his career, Rose was a project director/nutritionist for the WIC Nutrition Program in a farmworker clinic in rural California. His doctoral dissertation, done in affiliation with Mexico's National Institute of Nutrition, investigated household food consumption behavior in rural Mexico and its implications for improving government nutrition policy. After his doctorate, Rose worked for five years with USDA's Economic Research Service, as a research team leader on the determinants and consequences of household food insecurity in America, the nutrition and health impacts of food assistance programs, and the evaluation of low-income nutrition education projects. He then spent five years working on food security and nutrition issues in Mozambique with Michigan State University's Food Security Project and in South Africa with the University of Cape Town's Medical School.  

Rose's research at Tulane continues to focus on the social and economic side of nutrition problems, including disparities in access to food, the links between food access and consumption, and domestic and international food security. He has had recent research projects funded by USDA, NCI, and CDC on neighborhood access to healthy foods and policy initiatives to improve this access in New Orleans and southeast Louisiana. He recently returned from a sabbatical at the World Food Program, where he facilitated a global food security assessment project.
