Dr. Richard Oberhelman Named Chair of Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences

Richard Oberhelman

Effective July 1, Richard Oberhelman will begin serving as chair of the Department of Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences.

Oberhelman is no stranger to the chair’s seat, having served as acting chair of the Department of Tropical Medicine for two years from 2008-2010. In his message to the school community, Dean Pierre Buekens noted that Oberhelman has more than 30 years of academic and practice experience and called him an excellent example of a well-rounded public health researcher who truly understands both collaboration and the importance of training the next generation of public health professionals.

Oberhelman has served as the principal investigator for the Minority Health International Training Grant for the past seven years, overseeing trainees at seven international sites each year. He has actively integrated both Tulane faculty and students into his research base in Peru, epitomizing the interdisciplinary nature of public health. As a pediatrician with a very strong interest in maternal and child health, he provides a needed background in one of the three areas of GCHB.

"I know that Richard will provide strong administrative leadership to Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences as it continues to grow and expand," said Buekens added.

Buekens also thanked Carl Kendall for his outstanding service to the Department of Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences over the past year. In 2011, the department’s chair, Jeanette Magnus, left Tulane to become the  of the Institute for Health and Society at the University of Oslo in Norway. Kendall stepped in at that time on relatively short notice to serve as the department’s acting chair, just as the school was officially globalizing. "He has guided the department well over the past year and I appreciate his willingness and service to the school," said Dean Buekens.
