Physiology is the study of the body’s functional mechanisms and their underlying regulation. As such the discipline spans from the molecular level to the level of the whole organism. The Human Physiology Course is divided into several blocks including Body Fluids & Compartments, Membranes & Transport, Acid-Base Balance, Muscle, Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Renal, Gastrointestinal, and Endocrine systems. Lectures, problem-solving sessions, and small-group sessions featuring Problem-Based Learning all are geared to help you learn and apply physiologic principles to the understanding of pathophysiology. Clinical problems and cases are an integral part of the course and the course also coordinates with the Foundations in Medicine and Clinical Diagnosis courses to further illustrate and practice clinical applications of physiology. Teaching faculty come from the Departments of Medicine and Pharmacology as well as from the Department of Physiology.
Course Goals and Objectives
Students should be able to:
- Explain physiological mechanisms by applying basic principles of physics and chemistry.
- Describe the fundamental mechanisms underlying normal function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems of the human body, commensurate with the requirements for a physician providing primary care to patients.
- Explain the basic mechanisms of homeostasis by integrating the functions of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
- Apply knowledge of functional mechanisms and their regulation to explain the pathophysiology underlying common diseases.
- Effectively solve basic problems in Physiology and Pathophysiology, working independently and in groups.
- Identify and utilize appropriate reference resources to clarify and expand knowledge of Physiology and Pathophysiology.
