Department of Surgery


Surgical Pathways

The pre-clinical student is given an introduction to the basics of surgical science by way of experience with surgical skills, principles and opportunities for career development.
This preceptorship-based course sets students up with role-model surgeons to provide personalized instruction, teaching, and mentoring through time in the operating room, clinic, conferences, and rounds.  Students will have the opportunity to work with endocrine, transplant, hepatobiliary, plastics, robotics and minimally invasive surgery, breast, urology, ENT, ophthalmology and neurosurgery specialists.  Students will also receive formal didactic training from T4 Honors Surgery students, Residents and Attending physicians on topics including career directions within surgery, building a resume, succeeding on future clerkships and classic surgery diseases.  Students will also get hands on experience learning how to suture and knot tie, along with instruction on the basic tenants of laparoscopic surgery via skills lab simulation.


Grading Policy: 

Pass or Fail. Evaluation will be based upon participation by students through oral communication with the faculty and residents complimented by an appropriate presentation at the end of the course.


Enrollment:

Session 3- T/2’s only, Session 4- T1’s only.


Students:

8 minimum, 15 maximum per session


Time of course:

4 hours a week, times may vary slightly but will not affect exam and testing times.
