Pathways for Mentored Scholarly Activity Projects

The DeBakey Scholars Program project is a 4 year pursuit. There will be three pathways for students. It is anticipated that students will spend an average of one to two half-days per week during their 1st and 2nd years, exploring, reviewing literature, making correlations from coursework, meeting with the Program Director, developing a hypothesis or question, meeting with potential mentors, developing appropriate methodologies for the project, developing an achievable plan, and developing and keeping a plan to form.

Pathway One: Front end-loading – perform most of the intensive research (i.e., background literature search, and data gathering) during the Spring semester of the freshman year and during the summer between 1st and 2nd years.Complete and update project during years 3 and 4.

Pathway Two: Slow and Steady – perform the project at a regular pace throughout the 1st and 2nd years, a little in the 3rd year, and then finish during the 4th year.

Pathway Three: Back end-loading – perform preliminary work in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd but complete the most intensive work (analysis and conclusions) in the 4th year.
