Preventive Medicine Residency Program - Curriculum
The Tulane University General Preventive Medicine Residency Program is jointly sponsored by the Tulane University School of Medicine and the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. It is designed to prepare residents for careers in academic, administrative and public health practice. The program is fully accredited for two phases: the Academic Phase and the Practicum Phase. Residents typically complete the phases concurrently. Prior to entry into the program, each resident must have completed a clinical year in an ACGME-accredited program with a minimum of 6 months of direct patient care.
In most cases, trainees complete the Academic and Practicum phases concurrently over the two-year program. This structure enables residents to work on longer-term public health projects that would not be feasible within a one-year practicum period. It also allows residents to take a greater variety of courses at the School of Public Health and to integrate their didactic and experiental learning.
Physicians who have earned a master or doctorate degree from a U.S School of Public Health accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health prior to matriculation in the program may be exempted from the academic phase. In this case, the program will consist of two years of full-time practicum experience. Completion of the academic requirements must precede or be concurrent with the activities of the practicum phase.
House staff receive oral feedback at mid-rotation and written evaluation at the end of each rotation by attending staff. All evaluations are reviewed by the program director. Resident performance in the Academic Phase of the program is documented by official transcripts from the Tulane School of Public Health. In addition, all residents take the annual in-service examination sponsored by the American College of Preventive Medicine. The Program Director meets with each resident on a semi-annual basis to review academic and practicum evaluations with the resident.
Residents complete a written evaluation of each rotation after the close of the rotation and a written evaluation of the program as a whole on a semi-annual basis. The Program Evaluation includes assessment of the academic, didactic, and practicum experiences over the previous 6 months. The residents' rotation and program evaluations are reviewed in aggregate by the Program Director and the Residency Advisory Committee.
