Determinants of longevity and healthy aging
Dr. S. Michal Jazwinski received his doctoral degree from Stanford University. He completed postdoctoral training at The Rockefeller University where he stayed on as assistant professor. He moved to Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans as associate professor, where he achieved the rank of professor. He is currently professor of medicine and professor of biochemistry at Tulane University. He also directs the Tulane Center for Aging and the Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Aging Studies. His research is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health. He is a National Institute on Aging MERIT Awardee. He has held a program project grant from NIH and a Senior Scholar Award from the Ellison Medical Foundation, and he is currently the program director of an NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence. His research interests are in the areas of genetics of aging, molecular genetics, and population genetics.
His laboratory focuses on identifying the genes that contribute to longevity and healthy aging and on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying their action. The laboratory uses a wide range of methods and techniques in molecular genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, quantitative genetics, and population genetics. Biological aging in the yeast model system, in tissue culture, and in humans are studied. The latter involves an array of analytic and statistical tools. Germane to diabetes and obesity is work on human healthy aging, in which an index to measure this phenotype has been developed. Energy metabolism and body composition are incorporated in these studies.
