Dean Ellithorpe, MD
Dr Ellithorpe, a native of Birmingham Alabama, received his MD degree from Tulane School of Medicine. He then completed an Internship and Internal Medicine residency on the Tulane University Division of Charity Hospital in New Orleans. His residency was interrupted by two years of active duty with the Air Force. After completion of his tour of duty with the Air Force he returned to New Orleans for his last year of residency. He then completed a three year NIH-sponsored Fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases at Tulane.
Since completing his training he has been a member of the Tulane School of Medicine faculty where he has served in a variety of roles, including Chief of the Pulmonary Diseases Section at the New Orleans VA Medical Center, Coursemaster for sophomore Physical Diagnosis, Director of Student Programs for the Department of Medicine, and Director of the Pulmonary Diseases Fellowship Program. In 1993 he established the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at Tulane as its first Director. He resumed that position after Hurricane Katrina.
He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases and is a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians. His clinical interests include cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis and other mycobacterial lung diseases, asthma and general pulmonary diseases.
