Normal megakaryocytes undergo endomitosis, yielding a total of 8 joined lobules. Occasionally further duplication occurs for 16 or 32 lobules. With MDSs, unilobate megakaryocytes may predominate, as shown in this image. Cells with two or three separated nuclear segments may be seen, or there may be cells with very many irregular-appearing segments.
