This graduate course, which is designed for all pharmacology graduate students, will stimulate self-directed learning by requiring students to reflect on:
- their own learning style
- curricular content (covered in other graduate courses)
- what they have learned from community service activities
- their personal professional goals, and evaluation of progress towards meeting their goals.
As well as
- For Masters students: community service activities - summarizing what they have done, reflecting on what they have learned, and why they believe what they have done is important. MS Students are required to participate in a minimum of 15 hours of community service activities per semester.
- Students can also elect to perform 30 hours of community service for 2 credit hours in a semester.This can be used to increase the total number of credits completed at the end of the MS program to 32 credit hours for those on a non-thesis track.
- The Tulane Center for Public Service is a resource that can be used to find a wide variety of community service activities that students can become involved in to meet this requirement.
- For Doctoral students: their lab research experiences - experimental design, hypothesis testing, why their results turned out the way they did, the health-related significance of their research
A minimum average contribution of 200 words/month of reflective essay to a course blog is required. The minimum word count per month is reduced to 150 words if photos are posted in the blog post, and to 50 words if a YouTube video is included.
By participating in this course you will:
- reflect on your learning style in order to develop more effective study strategies to improve academic performance
- apply critical thinking skills to reflect on the scientific basis of modern therapeutics
- use modern information technology to enhance learning
- reflect on what you have learned from community service (or laboratory research) activities
- reflect on your professional goals & periodically evaluate your progress towards achieving them

ATTENDANCE & ABSENCES:
No attendance required.
Students are required to contribute reflective essay in their blog on:
- Educational topics covered in the curriculum (both MS & PhD students)
- Community service activities (MS students)
- Laboratory activities (for PhD students)
This course is an elective for doctoral students.
This course is part of the core curriculum for MS students, and reflective essays will be posted on a blog viewable by anyone inside or outside the University.
Students are required to follow common sense rules of online etiquette.
A grading rubric has been posted.
Letter Grade (A, A-, B+…Fail). There are no formal exams.
