Research has shown that there are significant learning & performance benefits that can be derived from Quiz-Based Learning, potentially improving learning by 150% or more (Will Thalheimer, www.work-learning.com). Dobson (2008) also recently reported significantly higher "summative" exam scores for students who used "formative" online quizzes beforehand (Dobson JL. Adv Physiol Educ 32:297-302, 2008). An important factor that improves the effectiveness of testing is feedback. Providing feedback enhances the benefits of testing by correcting errors and confirming correct responses (Larsen DP et al. Medical Education 42:959-966, 2008).
