Research Interest:
Characterization of chromosome microdeletion syndromes with particular interest in deletion in 22q13

Katy Phelan, PhD, is the Director of the Cytogenetics Laboratory at the Hayward Genetics Center and associate professor of pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine.  Dr. Phelan received a BS degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL and a PhD in Human Genetics from Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.  She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in cytogenetics at the Greenwood Genetics Center in South Carolina.  She is a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics and is certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics as a Clinical Cytogeneticist and as a PhD Medical Geneticist.  Dr. Phelan is the recent Past President of the Southeastern Regional Genetic Group (SERGG) (2012-2014) and serves on the American College of Medical Genetics Economics of Genetic Services Committee.  She was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the American College of Medical Genetics (2015-2021).  She is the Founder of the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS) Family Support Group and Research Foundation and a member of the PMS Research Advisory Board.  Her interests include characterization of chromosome microdeletion syndromes, with particular interest in deletion 22q13, and identification of novel chromosome abnormalities in cancer.
