Chief, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
Dr Sam is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Tulane University Heart & Vascular Institute in New Orleans. A native of New Orleans, he graduated magna cum laude from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. After graduating from the Duke University School of Medicine, he completed a general surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). At UIC Dr. Sam received a Master's of Science degree in Surgery from the UIC graduate college where his thesis directly resulted in a new drug use patent for the treatment of sepsis.
In 2010 he completed an executive Master of Medical Management degree from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine's Department of Health Systems Management.
After completing a fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at the Feinberg Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, he entered into private practice in Baton Rouge in 2003, where he served as the chief of vascular surgery at the Baton Rouge General Hospital from 2007-2012. In addition to becoming one of the first physicians nationally to be board certified in general surgery, vascular surgery and endovascular medicine; he has served as a principal investigator for several national and international vascular clinical trials. He serves as Tulane's board chair of the Gulf South Quality Network -a clinically integrated physician network comprising nine member hospitals and 1,600 physicians in south Louisiana and Mississippi overseeing processes to improve quality and safety.
Civilly, he served on the Louisiana Board of Regents from 2011-14 where during his tenure he served as secretary/treasurer, personnel committee chair and co-chaired the search resulting in the current commissioner of higher education (Dr. Joseph Rallo).
Dr. Sam has received numerous awards including selection by the Baton Rouge Business Report as a 2006 "40 under 40" award recipient. He is a graduate of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber leadership program and serves on the board of directors for the Baton Rouge Area Foundation – a top 20 ranked community foundation with assets valuated at over $600 million.
