Modeling dielectrophoretic particle assembly in microfluidic devices
using immersed boundary and immersed interface methods


Dielectrophoresis, an electrokinetic transport mechanism, is used in
many applications involving the manipulation of biomaterials,
particles and biological cells. We use an immersed interface method to
obtain the AC electric field in a fluid media with suspended particles
and an immersed boundary method for the fluid mechanics and particle
transport. The Maxwell stress tensor is used to calculate the
dielectrophoretic force acting on the particles. This hybrid method is
used to investigate dielectrophoretic phenomena including particle
trapping and assembly.
