The launch celebration was done in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Neuroscience at Tulane University. The full-day event included alumni talks, a keynote address by Dr. Fred Gage of the Salk Institute, and a ground breaking ceremony for the Brain Institute's footprint at Flower Hall.
Devon Walker's path through life has changed significantly since he suffered a cervical spinal injury in 2012. He sets his sights on outreach and community engagement with the creation of the Devon Walker Foundation, a global awareness campaign for visibility, treatments & research on spinal cord injuries.
The $40,000 prize supports outstanding faculty research initiatives. Dr. Mostany is pioneering investigations into synaptic dynamics in aging brains using two-photon microscopy. This technique allows researchers to study precisely the same neurons in the mouse brain over the course of a lifespan, a feat impossible with other techniques.
This summer, 14 undergraduate students participated in the Tulane Undergraduate Research Program in Neuroscience. Over the course of 10 weeks, students were immersed in research, took turns giving oral presentations, and created professional posters for a culminating poster presentation.
Danny Oseid has received a 2016 Young Investigator Scholarship from the Alzheimer Drug Discovery conference. This prestigious scholarship is awarded to only 10 researchers from across the country including graduate students and post-docs.

WWL-TV highlights the story of Devon Walker, a Tulane football player who was left paralyzed from the neck-down from a September 2012 game. Devon is now pursuing a MS from the Neuroscience program at Tulane, with the hopes that his education will help him develop therapies for spinal cord rehabilitation.
Yu-Ping Wang, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, biostatistics and bioinformatics at Tulane University, is part of a newly awarded NSF grant totaling $5.9 million.
The NSF grant is part of an initiative called Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. The money will be used for developing computational neuroscience programs in addition to continued training and education of Tulane undergraduate and graduate neuroscientists.

Dr. Andrea Zsombok & Dr. Andrei Derbenev have been highlighted by Tulane University's School of Medicine as Rising Stars in Research. Dr. Zsombok researches new approaches to diabetes treatment, while Dr. Derbenev studies the causes of hypertension.
One highlight of Saturday’s (May 17) Tulane University Commencement ceremony is honoring outstanding teachers. Receiving 2014 President’s Awards for Graduate and Professional Teaching are Gary Dohanich, professor of psychology and neuroscience.... These honors recognize faculty members with a compelling record of excellence in teaching, learning and research, and a commitment to educational excellence.
What sets Gary Dohanich apart “is the time and thoughtfulness that he willingly devotes to support individual graduate students,” says a Tulane colleague and a former student of Dohanich. His teaching skills “are legendary,” she says, and his mentoring of doctoral students has been a major influence on science at Tulane. A driving force in development of neuroscience as a discipline on campus, he is founder and co-director of the neuroscience master’s program and associate director of the PhD program.
When Hannah Gilder looks back on her four years at Tulane University, she will fondly remember the professors who helped guide and support her as she planned the next phase of her life: medical school.
But the one thing that will stand out above all else is the time she spent with Tulane Emergency Medical Services (TEMS), the student-run ambulance service that is based on the uptown campus.
Over the past four years, she and her fellow EMTs, all nationally certified, responded to such calls as alcohol poisoning, drug overdoses, car accidents and orthopedic injuries. Some of the toughest were those of a psychiatric nature, such as suicide threats.
The Goldwater Scholarship, established by Congress in 1986 to honor Sen. Barry Goldwater’s 56 years of service to the United States, is the premier national award for undergraduates interested in careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The one and two-year scholarships provide up to $7,500 in tuition and other college expenses.
That Tulane had a student receive honorable mention is also a significant achievement, Escarra said.
Shrey Kashyap of Metairie plans to pursue a doctorate in pharmacology. Her career goals include conducting research to develop medications for neuroendocrinological disorders and teaching at the university level.
Wearing blue, plastic gloves like budding brain surgeons, a group of New Orleans area children cautiously peered at the cool, grey brains they were holding before them. Orchestrated by the Greater New Orleans Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (GNOCSN), the event was geared toward children ages 5 to 12 and aimed to teach them how brains work and what happens when a person suffers from injury or illness to the brain, such as a stroke or physical trauma. The event was part of Brain Awareness Week March 10-16, a global campaign first spearheaded by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives in 1996. Its mission is to teach the public the importance of continued funding for brain and nervous system research and how this research can impact the world at large.
The Public Service Internship Program offered at Tulane is one pathway for students to gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of their study and help narrow down their future career choice. Students who participate in the program concurrently take an internship seminar aimed at enhancing reflection on community engagement and gaining a deeper understanding of key community issues. One of the Tulane departments that facilitates its own area-focused seminar is Neuroscience, with Kelsey Ward as the instructor beloved by all of her students.
Tulane University child psychiatrist Dr. Michael Scheeringa received a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for his pioneering research on the emotional and behavioral problems of very young children.
Scheeringa, who is the Remigio Gonzalez, M.D., Professor of Child Psychiatry at the Tulane School of Medicine, received the 2013 Irving Philips Award for Prevention, an honor for those who have made significant contributions to the prevention of mental illness in children and adolescents.
Living in a violence-plagued neighborhood may cause such great stress that a person’s gene expression may be altered. These are the findings of Katherine Theall, Stacy Drury and an interdisciplinary team of Tulane University researchers.
Theall is associate professor of global community health and behavioral sciences at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and Drury is assistant professor of psychiatry in the School of Medicine.

The human brain always has fascinated graduate Melissa Herman. In her first year of college, she joined the Tulane University Neuroscience Association (TUNA), a special-interest group. When she was a sophomore, Herman found a way to share enthusiasm about neuroscience with high school students by launching an after-school neuroscience teaching program at the New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School, rotating a half-dozen Tulane students as tutors.
It was a fluke that Michelle Liu, soon to be a graduate of Tulane University, discovered that her passion is elder care. As a first-year student, Liu attended an activities expo on campus and signed up to volunteer at a home for the elderly.
Thinking that she would spend a pleasant afternoon playing bingo and listening to the elders tell stories, Liu was shocked by the living situations of the elderly she encountered. She became indignant through her first-hand experiences of seeing older adults of poor socioeconomic status who live with poor nutrition, poor housing and poor access to quality health care.
Liu, who is earning dual degrees in anthropology and neuroscience, is heading to Louisiana State University School of Medicine with the goal of becoming a geriatrician. She will be the first physician in her family.
Benjamin Hall, an assistant professor of cell and molecular biology and neuroscience at Tulane University, has won a $1.8 million grant that will enable him and his research team to explore questions that could eventually lead to new treatments for chronic depression.
The five-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health means Hall can purchase new lab equipment and employ additional researchers to study the role of the NMDA receptor in the treatment of depression. The NMDA receptor plays a critical role in the transmission of information between neurons.
As director of neuroscience at Tulane University, Jeffrey Tasker always looked forward to the Society for Neuroscience’s annual conference each fall. New Orleans was on the group’s three-city rotation, giving his students an opportunity to learn from some of the best minds in the field. But last year, after holding its 2012 conference in the Crescent City in mid-October, the group replaced New Orleans with Chicago. The official reason: threat of hurricanes. Now, Tasker is leading the charge to persuade the society to rethink its decision and return New Orleans to the rotation with San Diego and Washington, D.C. His efforts include a petition drive and a letter-writing campaign.
The annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) made its return to New Orleans for the first time since Hurricane Katrina, sweeping over 25,000 neuroscientists into the city this past October. After demonstrating their intellectual prowess at poster sessions and seminars all day, the Tulane Neuroscience graduate students hosted the mixer on Monday Oct. 15th at The Howlin' Wolf. "We wanted to share with all the visiting neuroscientists what happens only in New Orleans, and only at Tulane!" said Deb Karhson, 5th year doctoral student.

Dr. Hall has received a National Science Foundation Career Award. Over the next five years, the grant will provide $920,000 in funding for Hall's laboratory research and his work with undergraduate students in the sciences. Hall's research involves cortical development, which requires morphological elaboration of billions of neurons and precise formation and maturation of trillions of synaptic connections. The goal of research in his laboratory is to improve our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate cortical synapse development.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has awarded a grant (R21-NS065374) to Dr. Michael J. Moore for studying the immobilization of developmental ligands in micropatterned hydrogels for guided nerve growth. His approach involves digital light projection (DLP), the same technology used in DLP televisions and projectors, for patterning biocompatible hydrogels on the scale of micrometers (1/1000th of a millimeter). These micropatterned hydrogels provide a three-dimensional environment for studying the guidance of neural tissue growth in response to biomolecules engineered into the gels. The work may have future implications for understanding the development and repair of the nervous system.
