Alvarez on the Move

Summer 2013

AlvarezDr. Julie Alvarez, Senior Professor of Practice in Tulane’s Department of Psychology, has accepted a Psychologist position at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans. Dr. Alvarez served as a Professor of Practice in Psychology since 2006, teaching a wide variety of required and elective courses. Her undergraduate offerings included large enrollment courses such as Introductory Psychology and Psychological Testing and Measurement, as well as smaller enrollment courses, including an upper-level Clinical Neuropsychology honors course and a freshman TIDES Psychology in the Movies seminar. She also offered graduate coursework in Psychoeducational Assessment. In addition, she developed an intensive course for the sophomore Newcomb Scholar honors students that allowed her students to gain insight into the epistemological approaches used by different disciplines to uncover truth.

In a given year, Dr. Alvarez taught well over 400 Tulane students and was recognized by students and colleagues for her broad knowledge, boundless enthusiasm, and tireless commitment. In the classroom, she was well known for a challenging and engaging style that inspired her students to reach their full potential and beyond.

Dr. Alvarez graduated from Tulane summa cum laude, with honors in Psychology and a minor in Classical Studies. Winner of a prestigious Beinecke Scholarship for graduate study, she earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Emory University. Dr. Alvarez completed a predoctoral internship at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System with specialization in Clinical Neuropsychology and then continued her training as a Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Fellow at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston.

As an alumna of Newcomb College, Dr. Alvarez became a dedicated advocate and dynamic contributor to activities that promoted the college experience of Tulane’s women students, including an ongoing participation in the Newcomb College Institute.

Dr. Alvarez established the highest standards for teaching after accepting a faculty position in the first cohort of Professors of Practice hired following Hurricane Katrina. Her new position at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans will allow her to remain in her beloved hometown while providing her the opportunity to utilize her clinical training and skills to assist military service members and veterans. Nevertheless, Dr. Alvarez leaves her position at Tulane with regret and the students and faculty members of Tulane will surely miss her expertise and enthusiasm as a teacher and colleague.
