Wall Fund Round 4 Awards

Approximately $1.4 million were awarded in Spring 2003 to the following projects that supported Strategic Planning Initiatives in the areas of Education and Research, with a greater focus on individual schools and units rather than the whole university:

1. Tulane Center for River-Ocean Studies

An award to provide infrastructure support for further development of the river-related research center within LAS, increasing the likelihood of it being named a National Science Foundation center and receiving federal funding.

Award: $250,000 over two years.

Principal Investigators:
Brent McKee, Professor, LAS Geology
Doug Meffert, Clinical Associate Professor, Center for Bioenvironmental Research
Tom Bianchi, Professor, LAS Geology

2. Enhancements to Neurosciences Undergraduate Education

This award will provide infrastructure support for expansion of the neurosciences program at the undergraduate level, an area of strategic importance and strength for the university.

Award: $200,000 over three years.

Principal Investigators:
Richard Harlan, Professor, Structural & Cellular Biology, School of Medicine
Gary Dohanich, Professor, LAS Psychology
David Hurley, Associate Professor, LAS Cell & Molecular Biology

3. The College of Human and Urban Ecology

An award, to be distributed in increments as established benchmarks are met, will allow for a three-year planning period for this new college. These milestones will measure progress in planning and support from the university community, and will also include a sunset provision. Success in meeting these milestones will trigger the release of additional Wall support for the following year, and approval to continue program development once Wall Funds have been expended. Wall Funds will be awarded to this project as follows:

  • Year 1 award (7/1/03-6/30/04): $50,000.

If Year 1 milestones are met, then Wall funds for Year 2 will be released.

  • Year 2 award (7/1/04-6/30/05): $119,628.

Additional Wall funds (up to a total award of $489,806) will be released if milestones are met.

Ana Lopez, Associate Provost, Office of Academic Affairs
Ron Marks, Dean, School of Social Work
Don Gatzke, Dean, School of Architecture

4. Upgrade and Construction of Biosafety Level-3 Facilities

This project will provide infrastructure support to strengthen research competitiveness in areas related to bioterrorism, infectious diseases, vaccine research, and the study of pathogens of medical and public health importance.
