Residential Curriculum

Through our residential curriculum, the Department of Housing and Residence Life offers students an intentional living and learning experience while they reside in the residence halls. The residential curriculum prioritizes student learning through multiple strategies based on a set of learning outcomes designed to provide students with a holistic experience while at Tulane. These strategies emphasize the individual student, community responsibility, and academic success. The residential curriculum shapes how our Resident Advisors interact with our residents, how we engage students in programming, and the ways in which we bring academics, wellness, global citizenry, and faculty into the halls.

Curriculum Foundations

  • Personal and Social Responsibility
  • Academic Engagement
  • Effective Communication
  • Multicultural Competence
  • Wellness and Healthy Living

Outcomes

  • Residents will experience a sense of individual value and importance in their living environment.
  • Residents will learn about their peers and the world around them, recognizing differences and developing the skills to interact within those differences.
  • Residents will get to know their neighbors and enjoy their living environment.
  • Residents will be exposed to resources and programs to explore career and academic options, while being prompted to engage in intellectual exchange with fellow students, faculty, and staff.

Role of the Resident Advisor

The Department of Housing and Residence Life works to achieve the goals of the residential curriculum through relationship building. For this reason, our Resident Advisors (RA) play a significant role in the implementation of the residential curriculum through identifying individual and community needs. Once those needs are identified educational strategies such as intentional conversations, community and/or campus partner programs, and the sharing of university resources are utilized to attend to those needs.
