Hospitalization and Post-Hospitalization Support

At times, a student will voluntarily/involuntarily need to be hospitalized. A primary goal for the Office of Case Management and Victim Support Services (CMVSS) is to provide a supportive environment for all students.  

When Campus Health hospitalizes a student, the Campus Health office notifies the Student Affairs Professional On-Call, who in turn, notifies CMVSS. Anytime the University receives notification, either from Campus Health or other sources, that a student has been hospitalized, CMVSS shall attempt to determine if the student’s emergency contact has been notified. In certain circumstances where, in the professional judgment of the office, parental notification is necessary in order to protect the welfare of the student, CMVSS will notify the student’s emergency contact. The office shall then notify the student’s academic advisor and the appropriate Academic Dean’s office.  

The Office of Case Management & Victim Support Services provides hospitalization and post-hospitalization support, coordination of care, and advocacy. Once a student is discharged from the hospital, they will meet with the appropriate clinician at the Student Health Center for evaluation and recommendation for continued treatment and appropriate supports.  

Once the Student Health Center clinician clears the student, they will meet with staff from CMVSS.  

Case Management services are available to help with the following: 

  • Acting as a liaison between the student and campus departments as requested by the student;
  • Coordinating academic questions or concerns, including notifying professors and others of any absences or missed work during a hospitalization. Please note: unless otherwise indicated by the student, professors will be informed that the student has experienced a medical emergency;
  • Providing coordination and referral assistance with the hospital staff and the Student Health Center clinician for post-hospitalization treatment either on or off campus;
  • Assisting the student with reintegration into the Tulane residential and/or campus community;
  • Providing assistance and coordination with a medical withdrawal should the student request one;
  • Providing ongoing care coordination and support as well as any other supports or resources as needed on a case-by-case basis.
