CAB Update November 20, 2015

Dear members of the TNPRC Community Advisory Board

As you may have heard or seen recently, an animal rights group known as Stop Animal Exploitation Now (SAEN) issued a press release about the TNPRC based on several old public reports that they made sound like something new. This included the Burkholderia pseudomallei incident, a typographical error on an Animal Care and Use Protocol and a 2012 event with a nonhuman primate who was being transported for care. Here are the facts in each case:

Three macaques at the Tulane National Primate Center were humanely euthanized between November 2014 and February 2015 after showing signs of exposure to Burkholderia pseudomallei. This has been a topic of multiple updates to this group since early this year. The USDA found that TNPRC staff members had failed to adhere to established biosafety and infection control procedures in this instance. The USDA also determined that Tulane had made the necessary changes in retraining staff and implementing additional measures to prevent any further incidents. We have now tested 3,220 animals which represents approximately 85% of the animals in the non-research colony. With the exception of the three macaques noted above no additional confirmed cases of infection have been identified. Nor has any human infection occurred as a result of this incident.

Dear members of the TNPRC Community Advisory Board

Over the last month, we continued to receive good news in regard to our ongoing investigation of Burkholderia pseudomallei (Bp).

Testing of the seropositive, healthy macaques has not revealed any evidence of shedding of Bp. Similarly, Bp has not been found in any wildlife in the area. Furthermore, as you will recall from prior messages no evidence of Bp has been found in the soil, after extensive testing.

We will continue testing our monkey colony in collaboration with the CDC. We have now tested 2,107 animals which represents approximately 57% of the animals in the breeding colony. No infection with Bp in any animal has been identified since March. Lastly, and most importantly, there has never been at TNPRC any evidence of infection of humans by Bp.
