As an Assistant Professor-Research within the Division of Pathobiological Sciences at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, I am responsible for developing my independent tuberculosis research program. The LSU position is my primary appointment. Additionally I continue to hold the position of Research Assistant Professor at the Division of Microbiology, Tulane National Primate Research Center, via a memorandum of understanding.
I employ a nonhuman primate model of TB, which is based on infecting rhesus macaques with infectious aerosols of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). My research focus is to
i) Evaluate potential novel vaccines for their safety and efficacy. These candidates could be attenuated whole-bacterium, subunit, DNA-based or viral vector based;
ii) Study the role of host negative regulators of T cell function e.g. IDO in modulating immune responses to Mtb infection in macaques ii) To test the safety and efficacy of recombinant/attenuated BCG strains as part of prime-boost vaccines against Mtb infection, again using the macaque model of TB.
