Purpose & Overview

The DRU Initiative at Tulane University is an effort in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and five other pilot schools to define and address issues that will improve the ability of university campuses across the nation to withstand significant disaster threats.

The purpose of this initiative at Tulane is to ensure the university is able to continue to fulfill and sustain its core mission and commitment to teaching and research in the event of a disaster. Disaster resistance is achieved through recognition and analysis of the risks of natural and man-made hazards, mitigation of the human and economic impact of disasters, and comprehensive planning for resumption of university functions.

A successful disaster resistance program is an ongoing commitment of the university. As such the initiative will seek ways to instill this sense of commitment to the disaster resistant goals throughout the day-to-day operation of the university.

The lessons learned through implementation of this program at Tulane and at the five other pilot schools will be used to guide the implementation of this program on university and college campuses throughout the nation.
